چکیده

Chlorine is a yellowish-green gas with a pungent, irritating odor. It is intermediate water-soluble and can cause acute damage to both upper and lower respiratory tracts. Its toxicity is thought to be mediated by the generation of hydrogen chloride upon contact with moist mucous membrane and by the formation of free radicals at the cellular level. Toxic exposures to chlorine were first reported in 1915 when chlorine was used as a chemical warfare agent in Ypres, Belgium. In the 1920s, chlorine was introduced as a bleaching agent. Chlorine was subsequently used in many industrial processes as well as household bleaching and water purification. Because chlorine is often transported and stored under pressure in pipes, trucks, or tanks, many mass Abstract

Deviations from Haber's Law for multiple measures of acute lung injury in chlorine-exposed mice.

Chlorine gas is considered a chemical threat agent that can cause acute lung injury. Studies in the early 20th century on war gases led Haber to postulate that the dose of an inhaled chemical expressed as the product of gas concentration and exposure time leads to a constant toxicological effect (Haber's Law). In the present work, mice were exposed to a constant dose of chlorine (100 ppm-h) del...

TRPV4: an exciting new target to promote alveolocapillary barrier function.

Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are emerging as important players and drug targets in respiratory disease. Amongst the vanilloid-type TRP channels (which includes the six members of the TRPV family), target diseases include cough, asthma, cancer, and more recently, pulmonary edema associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Here, we critically evaluate a recent report that ...

Abnormal epithelial structure and chronic lung inflammation after repair of chlorine-induced airway injury.

Chlorine is a toxic gas used in a variety of industrial processes and is considered a chemical threat agent. High-level chlorine exposure causes acute lung injury, but the long-term effects of acute chlorine exposure are unclear. Here we characterized chronic pulmonary changes following acute chlorine exposure in mice. A/J mice were exposed to 240 parts per million-hour chlorine or sham-exposed...

Time course of airway remodelling after an acute chlorine gas exposure in mice

Accidental chlorine (Cl2) gas inhalation is a common cause of acute airway injury. However, little is known about the kinetics of airway injury and repair after Cl2 exposure. We investigated the time course of airway epithelial damage and repair in mice after a single exposure to a high concentration of Cl2 gas. Mice were exposed to 800 ppm Cl2 gas for 5 minutes and studied from 12 hrs to 10 da...

Inhalation of chlorine gas.

The clinical features of acute chlorine gas inhalation, and its management are reviewed. Current medical views on the chronic effects of an acute overwhelming exposure on lung function (reactive airways dysfunction syndrome), and the more controversial field of lung disease secondary to repeated inhalations of lower concentrations of chlorine gas are discussed.
